1957 DEE HANDLE FOR ANU FURNITURE

This small Dee handle was designed by me soon after I joined Fred Ward in the ANU Design Unit in 1957.

It was intended to be used on a range of metal framed desks for general use as drawer and cupboard doors pulls.

It was manufactured in quantity by Brentware P/L in Melbourne and sold commercially, but ANU never charged a royalty fee. It can be seen around the second hand furniture shops, mainly in brass, occasionally in satin chrome.

It was a nicely formed handle having a more generous, attractive appearance than the usual straight Dee handle. Psychologically it was a more intuitive finger action than the plain Dee handle which had a rather ‘blunt’ or abrupt appearance.
