1973 ANU FAREWLL PRESENTATION TO SIR JOHN CRAWFORD, RETIRING VC

In 1973 Sir John Crawford retired as Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University and I was asked by Ross Hohnen to design a table centrepiece candelabra.

The black bean base was made by Peter Darling, Head of Woodworking at Research School of Physical Sciences and the silverwork was carried out by Frank Burden, Head of Metalworking, also at RSPhys.S.

Both were superb craftsmen and all in the ANU Design Unit were delighted with their work.

Sir John died in 1984 and presented it to University House where it can now be seen.

(I suspect he really didn’t like it)

It’s a pity the photos do not include the slender candles it was designed for – it looks so much better with them. It was used with candles at the 2016 Founders Day dinner in University House which Maxine and I attended after I had given an address to all student members about the early days of University House and Fred Ward’s role in furnishing it .

Finally, WITH candles – which give it all the right proportions
